You may not remember her name but I’m sure you remember the posts that made her a social media celebrity. Sedona Prince is a star basketball player at the University of Oregon who posted videos showing the disparities between the men’s weight room and the women’s weight room at the 2021 NCAA tournament. Her posts lead to an official apology from the NCAA and outrage throughout the country. I spent an incredible evening honoring Sedona at The Edition Hotel in New York City on her new documentary, “The Rule of Sedona Prince” premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival. When Sedona spoke, one of the things she talked about was being afraid to be queer growing up in a small town in Texas. And how people can now be queer and feel safe. I think living a life where you can be authentic and true to who you are is something that many of us take for granted. As we celebrate pride month, we should be grateful for the fact that we CAN celebrate and that people don’t have hide like Sedona referenced from her childhood. Happy pride month.
